For a good reason, I needed to start nautilus in XFCE one day. Once my job with it was done, I minimized all windows and what do I see? My wallpaper has disappeared, all my desktop icons are gone and when I right click on the desktop, instead of the usual XFCE menu appearing, I get nothing. After a lot of trial and error, I found what the problem was. When you invoke nautilus, it automatically becomes the window manager and stops allowing XFCE to manage the desktop. In order to get your XFCE to work normally again, you need to go to the settings manager, hit 'desktop' and select 'allow XFCE to manage the desktop'.
