Installing the Windows version of Mono to run .NET executables

Sometimes, when installing a Windows program using wine, the installation stops with the message

wine: Install the Windows version of Mono to run .NET executables

To combat this issue, you need to use winetricks. First get winetricks:

$ wget http://winetricks.org/winetricks

Next, you use winetricks to install Mono:

$ sh winetricks mono28

This will download the necessary files and start the installation.

  1. Thanks friend. This worked for me on Debian Squeeze after applying the below workaround to avoid the 'wineserver not found' error..

    sudo ln -s /usr/lib/wine/wineserver /usr/local/bin/wineserver

    Regards, Jim
